Mr Pawan Agarwal is from the Indian Administrative Service of 1985 batch from the West Bengal Cadre. He is currently the Special Secretary, Logistics in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Earlier he served as Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. For four years from 2016 to 2020, he was the CEO of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). During this period, he led the transformation of country’s food authority coming out from the Maggi crisis to well-functioning food safety regulator, a model for other low- and middle-income countries. Eat right movement was also initiated in these years. This peoples’ movement for behavioral change to influence and incentivize consumer and food handler behavior for safe food, healthy and sustainable diets was declared the top visionary for the Food System Vision 2050 prize by the Rockefeller Foundation.
